Begin With Books Jack’s Cosmic Dogs would like to encourage you to support Begin With Books (BWB), a cause near and dear to our hearts. It is a program that fills a critical gap in Charleston County’s overall efforts to improve our workforce and economy. BWB is the Charleston County affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a highly-accredited free books-by-mail program for babies and toddlers, covering the critical development years from birth through age 4.
BWB is reaching over 2,350 children in rural Charleston County and the Peninsula and has been challenged with a $65,000 match grant from the Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust to expand to the City of North Charleston. As I’m sure you know, North Charleston has a very high poverty rate (40% of its children live in poverty) and some of the worst school scores in the County. The $65,000 grant must be matched by $85,000 from the community in order to open enrollment in North Charleston. Priscilla and I and Jack’s Cosmic dogs have been strong supporters of this program since its inception in 2010, and I hope you will join us.
Donations are fully tax deductible and can be made online or via check to BEGIN WITH BOOKS, PO Box 183, Charleston, SC 29402. Thanks and cheers! Jack Hurley and Priscilla Shumway

Sharkbanz Experience the peace of mind knowing you are protected from sharks.
Sharkbanz use special patented magnetic technology to deter sharks from attacking and investigating people. Most shark attacks occur in murky, shallow waters off the coast where there are a high number of swimmers and sharks sharing the same space. In this environment, sharks rely heavily on their electro-receptors instead of their eyes to “see” what’s around them. They possess the most sensitive electro-magnetic sense of all known animals, and use it to judge distance, shape, and even the heart rate of other animals near them. Most of the time, sharks get it right and leave people alone. Occasionally, they don't. Sometimes when relying on their electro-receptors, a curious shark may bite a person in order to figure out what he or she is. These unprovoked “hit and run” attacks are the most common type, and Sharkbanz are an excellent defense against them. As the shark approaches a person wearing Sharkbanz, magnetic waves coming from the band disrupt its electro-receptors and it quickly turns away. The experience for the shark is, “like a person suddenly shining a very bright light in your eyes in a dark room, and its not pleasant”, according to Dr. Stroud. Once a shark comes near the band, it frequently leaves the area and does not return.
